The San Francisco nightlife is as diverse as its neighborhoods, its restaurants and its locals. The city’s massive selection of bars, lounges and dance clubs feature live entertainment, as well as celebrity DJs, playing everything from hip hop to electronic to funky alternative. Some nightclubs also host special events, parties and art showings.
Most nightlife venues are defined by their clientele. Affluent movers and shakers sip on blended whiskies at Nob Hill’s upscale hotel bars. Energetic clubbers show off their moves at ultra-chic Downtown dance clubs. Young bohemians congregate at SoMa art lounges. And, stress-free tourists indulge at the many bars and pubs surrounding Fisherman’s Wharf.
Some areas of San Francisco attract a relatively mixed crowd. North Beach offers an assortment of old watering holes and new trendy clubs. Portrero Hill presents a collection of salsa clubs, swank lounges and punk hangouts. And, the Castro District features some of the most unique bars around, offering patrons strong drinks and drag shows.
Each section of San Francisco brings forward a variety of nightlife options. Most bars close around midnight or 2:00 a.m. Numerous late-night eateries are available to accommodate hungry bar-hoppers.
