How to Choose a Pharmacy

Choosing a new pharmacy should not be a trial-and-error method. You should always research your options before choosing a pharmacy. Being informed will help you make the best decision for you and your family. The guide below gives you a brief description of each type of pharmacy:

Traditional Mom-and-Pop Pharmacies
First off, traditional mom-and-pop pharmacies are perfect for consumers who value an attentive and personalized customer experience. The pharmacists and pharmacy techs at these pharmacies familiarize themselves with their patients' medical histories so that they can provide them with nutrition recommendations and warn them about harmful drug combinations.

National Drugstore Chains
National drugstore chains like CVS® and Walgreens® usually serve a larger clientele than traditional mom-and-pop pharmacies. For that reason, it is difficult for their pharmacists and pharmacy techs to develop a close relationship with every customer.

Drugstore chains, however, provide a number of advantages over mom-and-pop pharmacies. For one, they typically offer locations with 24-hour availability. Many of their locations have convenient drive-up windows and automated order processing. Furthermore, their databases are usually integrated, so customers can choose to fill their prescriptions at any of the chains' many locations, even when they're on vacation in a different state.

Satellite Pharmacies
Satellite pharmacies offer the flexibility of national drug store chains. These retail pharmacies are located within large retail conglomerates like Wal-Mart® and Krogers®. Customers of satellite pharmacies can shop while they wait for their prescriptions to be filled.

Online Pharmacies
Drugstore chains and satellite pharmacies are extremely convenient, but the most convenient pharmacies are, in fact, online. Online pharmacies fill and ship prescribed medication directly to their customers' homes. Many of these pharmacies offer bulk order discounts. The two main disadvantages of these pharmacies are: 1) they often have longer wait times; and, 2) they can be risky.

When considering an online pharmacy, make sure you carefully evaluate your options. The pharmacy you choose should only deliver only authentic, clean and nontoxic drugs. It should also utilize proper handling procedures to ensure that all shipments remain in good condition, and it should offer expedited shipping, particularly in the case of an emergency.

Conclusion
There are many types of pharmacies. Each type offers its own set of benefits. Choose the type that will best meet your needs.
